"In Sigmund Freud's work Civilization and Its Discontents (1930) he also discusses the concept of a "cultural super-ego". The concept of super-ego and the Oedipus complex is subject to criticism for its perceived sexism. Women, who are considered to be already castrated, do not identify with the father, and therefore form a weak super-ego, leaving them susceptible to immorality and sexual identity complications."

Classical theory considers the successful resolution of the Oedipus complex to be developmentally desirable, the key to the development of gender roles and identity. Freud posited that boys and girls resolved the conflicts differently as a result of the male's castration anxiety (caused by oedipal rivalry with the father) and the female's penis envy. He also held that the unsuccessful resolution of the Oedipus complex could result in neurosis, paedophilia, and homosexuality.

olen aika vakuuttunut, että kyse on myös muistakin kuin mielipiteistä. freud on luonut malleja ihmisen mielestä, joiden on osoitettu selittävän ihmisen toimintaa ja toimivan käytännössäkin ihmisen toiminnan ennustamisessa ja selittämisessä.

toki voi olla toista mieltä, mutta silloin pitää mielestäni olla jotain muitakin perusteita kuin se, että ei hyväksy mitään sellaista teoriaa, jota pitää henkilökohtaisesti vastenmielisenä. nimittäin, jos teoria on silti toimiva ja oikea, niin silloin vain kieltää todellisen minänsä tai omaa vähemmän tietoa itsestään ja muista ihmisistä.

"Freud's writings on the Oedipus complex in females date primarily from his later writings, of the 1920s and 1930s. He believed that Oedipal wishes in females are initially expressions of homosexual desire for the mother. In 1925, he raised the question of how females later abandon this desire for their mother, and shift their sexual desires to their father (Appignanesisi & Forrester, 1992). Freud believed that this stems from their disappointment in discovery that they themselves lack a penis."
